Photovoltaic technology

Photovoltaics - what is that?
This is the question most frequently asked by customers. The simplest answer is:

Power generation by solar energy

PV Technik

How does a photovoltaic system work?

  • Extremely thin layers of silicon, which produce an electric current under solar radiation, are applied to a glass or foil surface. The more individual layers are applied to a surface, the higher the electric output of this surface. The surface on which the silicon cells are located is called a module.
  • Modules come in many different sizes - from the smallest module for solar garden watering pumps to large modules with a surface of several square metres.
  • The following modules are the most common:
    • Framed modules
    • Frameless modules, called laminates
    • oils

How long do solar cells work without energy loss?

The Fraunhofer-Institut, located in Freiburg, Germany, found out that modules, which had been operating for 10 years, did not show any degradation (i.e. loss of energy). Even after 20 years, the modules were still within the tolerance indicated on the type plate (e.g. +/- 5%).

What costs are generated by an operating system?

They amount to no more than 1% of the overall investment sum. What technologies are used?

There are basically two different kinds of photovoltaic systems:
  • Grid-connected solar electric systems
This is the most common form of solar electric systems. The power generated is directly supplied to the utility grid. A special metre has to be installed.
  • Stand-alone solar electric systems ("island systems")
This kind of system is mainly used for allotments, mountain lodges, apiaries, etc. The generated direct current (DC) is either used directly or converted to 230V alternating current (AC) with the help of an inverter.
